Jamestown, North Carolina

Jamestown is a town in Guilford County, North Carolina, United States, and is a suburb of the nearby cities of Greensboro and High Point. The population was 3,382 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Jamestown is located at 35°59′54″N 79°56′9″W / 35.99833°N 79.93583°W / 35.99833; -79.93583 (35.998221, -79.935733).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,088 people, 1,229 households, and 924 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,159.0 people per square mile (448.2/km²). There were 1,293 housing units at an average density of 485.3 per square mile (187.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 86.79% White, 7.97% African American, 0.19% Native American, 2.40% Asian, 0.74% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.04% of the population.

Jamestown (ship)

The Jamestown was a large sailing ship which was abandoned and ran aground near the Icelandic village of Hafnir on 26 June 1881.

History

The keel was laid in Richmond, Maine. She was registered there in 1880 after having been first floated the year before.

Abandonment

The Jamestown left Maine on the 10th of November, 1880, bound for Liverpool carrying a cargo of high-quality lumber. No sooner was the ship out of port than four of the crew jumped ship, and Captain William E. Whitmore had to find replacements. Then a windlass broke and the ship had to stop in Eastport, Maine for repairs. Finally underway across the Atlantic in early December, the ship encountered heavy seas and the rudder was torn away. After being battered by the seas for several weeks, the captain and crew was rescued by the Anchor Line steamer Ethiopia and left the Jamestown to drift at 43°06′N 22°00′W / 43.10°N 22°W / 43.10; -22. In total, 27 people were rescued, including the captain's wife and child.

The crew arrived safely in Glasgow on 16 February 1881, but their ship didn't reach its final resting place for another four months. On the morning of 26 June, residents of Hafnir woke to find that the enormous vessel had run aground the night before, although at that time of the year, it never gets fully dark at that latitude. The cargo of timber was particularly valuable in Iceland, which suffered almost complete deforestation in the several hundred years following the initial Viking settlement in 874. As such, the cargo was unloaded and one third of it was reserved for those who had participated in the salvage operation. The rest was auctioned off, bringing in about DKK 10,000. This is equivalent to USD 62,000 in 2012 dollars.

Jamestown (horse)

Jamestown (1928–1953) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred and raced by George D. Widener, Jr., an Exemplar of Racing described by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper as "one of thoroughbred racing's most respected horsemen."

Background

The Kentucky-bred Jamestown's name and image were used to promote Park & Tilford whiskey, which used the slogan: Proof of Kentucky bred quality! His sire was St. James, the 1923 retrospective American Co-Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. Jamestown was out of the mare Mlle. Dazie. His damsire was U. S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Fair Play, who also sired Man o' War.

Conditioned for racing by future U. S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer Jack Joyner, Jamestown raced against very strong opponents in 1930 and 1931 when he was part of what the Chicago Tribune newspaper called the "big four" in racing, which included Twenty Grand, Mate, and Equipoise.

Racing career

As a two-year-old, Jamestown won five important races, capping off 1930 with a win in the most prestigious race in the United States for two-year-olds, the Belmont Futurity Stakes. At a time when there was no official voting for annual racing Champions, Jamestown was recognized in the industry as the American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. Although Jamestown twice defeated Equipoise, he shared the 1930 retrospective honors as listed by The Blood-Horse magazine and Thoroughbred Heritage.

Health care in India, China, Russia and Africa is provided to vast rural areas by mobile health clinics or roadside dispensaries, some of which integrate traditional health practices. In India these traditional clinics provide ayurvedic medicine and unani herbal medical practice. In each of these countries traditional medicine tends to be a hereditary practice.

Philip Brigham

Philip (Phil) Brigham is a Canadian rock singer, composer and guitarist.

Early life

Phil became interested in music from a very early age. He played the saxophone in the school band from 4th to 9th grades, His first major influences were seeing Ricky Nelson on "The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet" and The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964. He didn't start playing guitar until autumn of 1966. He took lessons, and watched how other people played, whether live or on TV, and he listened to a lot of different music.

Clinic

Beginnings

At the end of his junior year in high school, Philip moved with his family to Paris, France, and from 1969 to 1970 attended The American School of Paris. It was in Paris that Philip met Phil Steele, then known as Phil Trainer. He was a 22- or 23-year-old bass player and vocalist, and he "raided" Philip's high school rock band, taking Phil on guitar, Gerry Murphy on drums, and flute player Chris Hayward. Steele had previously played in Japan and Italy and knew British keyboard player Alan Reeves, then 25 or 26, because Reeves had played in a band called Clinic in both countries, and Phil Steele did some Clinic gigs in Italy. They put together a five-piece band, and because they were British-American, and had some music industry connections, they immediately got signed to a production company, and subsequently were signed to EMI in France.
